Abstract
420,441. Grinding rolls &c. CRAVEN BROS. (MANCHESTER), Ltd., GREENWOOD, J. R., and WALLS, A. G., Reddish, Stockport. June 1, 1933, No. 15840. [Class 60] A roll for a rolling-mill. &c. is ground by means of two grinding-wheels employed in succession, the first grinding being by means of a wheel having its axis parallel to the roll, and the finish grinding being by means of a fine grained wheel having its axis at an angle, preferably a right-angle to the axis of the roll. The machine comprises a sliding saddle 2 carrying a transverse wheel slide 3 on which is mounted a grinding-wheel 4 surrounded by a guard 6 adjustable by a rack 10 and pinion 9 and locked by bolts 8 ; the wheel 4 performs the first grinding operation, and when this is complete, the wheel is withdrawn from the roll, and a bracket 11 is secured to the guard 6. The bracket supports a spindle 12, at rightangles to the spindle 5 of the wheel 4, carrying a finishing grinding-wheel 19, and the spindle 12 is driven by a belt 14 from a pulley 18 on the spindle 5, the belt passing over guide pulleys 16, 17, either or both of which may be adjustable to tension the belt ; the face of the wheel 19 may be trued to fit the cylindrical surface of the work. Water is supplied by a nozzle 20 and piping 21. The wheel 19 may be a lapping- wheel loaded with abrasive powder.
