Abstract

419,913. Keeping cooling-water hot. MATHER, C., 353, The Cliff, Higher Broughton, Salford, Lancashire. Feb. 27, 1934, No. 6291. [Class 7 (ii).] In a system having a heat-insulated tank 7 for storing the cooling liquid in a warm condition while the engine is idle, as described in Specification 387,418,the radiator 1 is provided with headers 2, 3 of the same capacity as similar lengths of the inlet and outlet pipes 4, 5, and filling and venting means are provided elsewhere than on the radiator. The tank is connected to the pipe 4 by a pipe 11 fitted with valves 16, 17, 18, and the pipe 11 is connected to the pump 9 by a pipe 8 with a valve 19. A vent and filling pipe 13 with a valve 20 is connected between the valves 17 18, and the pump is connected to the bottom header of the radiator by a pipe 10 with a drain valve 22. A drain pipe 14 with valve 21 is provided on the pipe 8. When the engine is started the valves 16, 17 and 18 are opened and the valves 19, 20, 21 and 22 closed, the liquid being delivered from the tank to the radiator, &c., in a warm condition. While the engine is running the vent valve 20 is preferably opened. When the engine is stopped the valves are set so that the pump may fill the tank, after which the valve 16 is closed and the drain valves 21, 22 opened.
