419,829. Motor-vehicle steering-gear. MIRFIN, E., 32, Millfield Road, Luton, and MIRFIN, F. W., 110, Glenparke Road, Forest Gate, London. May 22, 1933, No. 14684. [Class 79 (v).] Comprises hydraulic steering-gear in which a cylinder 1 having a piston 4 operated by the steering hand-wheel is connected by two flexible pipes 9, 11 to the rear ends of two steering cylinders A, the front ends of the cylinders being connected by a pipe 10. The cylinder 1 is mounted in any convenient position on the vehicle and its piston is formed with a rack 6 engaged by a pinion on the steering shaft 7 rotated by the driver. Each steering cylinder A may be fixed and the piston D connected by an arm S<1> to the stub axle, as shown in Fig. 6, or the cylinder A may be fixed to the stub axle X as shown in Fig. 5. In the latter case the piston D is formed with a slot for an extension F<1> of the steering pivot pin F which is keyed at G to the dead axle, so that movement of the piston in the cylinder rocks the cylinder and the stub axle about the pivot pin. The invention may be applied to independentlysprung steering wheels, or to a single steering wheel. The piston 4 may be operated by eccentric or crank mechanism instead of by a rack and pinion.
