Abstract
<PICT:0419566/III/1> Fatty acids, fats, vegetable oils &c. are distilled by flowing them in films over a continuous upright surface so that the films are heated by radiation from a heated surface arranged at a short distance from and surrounding the surface of the film. The material is fed through a pipe 2 so that it streams over the surface of a hollow body 1 lined with sheet metal and surrounded by a metal casing 3 heated by combustion gases flowing through a flue 18. Steam may be passed through a pipe 9 into the interior of the cylinder 1, which is thus heated, the steam finally flowing up between the cylinders 1, 3 and carrying off the vapours evolved through a pipe 10 connected to a vacuum pump. The materials may be preheated by flowing them up through the annular passage formed between two similar cylindrical bodies 13, 14 heated by an oil bath 15. Examples are given of the treatment of bone fat fatty acid, edible ground nut oil, and benzine fat solution.
