Abstract
418,453. Stapling continuous filaments. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, DICKIE, W. A., and TYCE, G. C., c/o British Celanese, Ltd., Spondon, near Derby. April 25, 1933, No. 12052. [Class 120 (iii).] To increase the strength of staple fibre yarns made from continuous artificial filaments particularly of cellulose acetate &c., the filaments before conversion to staple fibre are subjected to a stretching operation while in the softened condition as produced by an organic softening agent, the stretching taking place either continuously with the manufacture of the filaments or as an operation separate from such manufacture. By the stretching, the strength of the filaments is increased ; at the same time their denier is reduced. Stretching may be carried out according to the processes of Specifications 277,089, 323,790, [both in Class 120 (iii)], 370,430, and 371,461, and the filaments are preferably stretched to 200 per cent or more. Suitable softening agents are acetone, ethylene methylene ether, dioxane and similar cyclic ethers. The continuous filaments may be converted into staple fibre by cutting; or they may be passed through breaking rolls so as to rupture the filaments, the mass of fibres being treated either as a roving or converted directly into a spun yarn. The breaking rolls may be as described in Specifications 410,805 and 417,326. To restore the extensibility lost during the stretching operation, the continuous filaments or the spun yarn may be subjected to the conditioning treatment of Specification 411,506. Specification 417,325 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
