418,400. Semitrailer couplings. LAGACHE ET GLASZMANN, 6, Boulevard VereingÚtorix, Argenteuil, Seine-et-Oise, France. Sept. 14, 1933, No. 25454. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1932. [Class 79 (iii).] In semitrailer coupling means of the kind wherein the front end of the trailer rests on a cross-member supported on the back axle of the tractor by springs which are independent of the springs supporting the tractor frame, additional supporting means are provided for the cross-member to hold the cross-member springs off the tractor axle when relieved of the weight of the trailer. The cross member 16, which carries the conventional coupling fork 17 and pivoted turntable bearing plates 20, 21, is mounted in vertical guides 14, 15 fixed to the tractor frame 10 and transmits the weight of the trailer to helical springs 23, 24 which rest on bearing plates 25 carried either directly on the back axle 11 or upon the middle of the tractor suspension springs 13 attached to the axle. When relieved of the weight of the trailer, however, the cross member together with the springs 23, 24 is raised as shown in Fig. 3, by relatively weak supplementary springs 18 located in the guides 14, 15. Hydraulic jacks supported by the frame 10 or axle 11 and controlled by the driver may be substituted for the springs 18.
