[Classes 29 and 64 (i).] A heat exchanger in which beer &c. may be cooled or heated in its passage from a cask to a draw-off tap comprises a cylindrical chamber 11, preferably of glass, provided with end caps 12 secured by tie rods 13, and glass tubes 9, 10 passing through the chamber and connected at their lower ends by a rubber tube 21, the beer &c. being drawn through the chamber and a cooling or heating medium circulated through the inner tubes. Packing washers 15 are arranged in grooves in the end caps and washers 17 are placed around the ends of the inner tubes and compressed by loose plates 18 engaged over bolts 19. The chamber may be located below a counter, as shown in Fig. 5, provided with a pump 3, 4 and the flow of cooling or heating medium may be controlled by a valve 25. The pump may be fitted with a flushing and drain cock 24. Instead of employing two straight inner tubes a U-tube with its lower end within the chamber may be used. The apparatus may be used with the systems described in Specifications 398,042 and 413,199 for attemperating the beer &c. within the cask, in which case the supply and return tubes of the heat exchanger are connected to the supply and return mains of the cask system.
