Abstract

416,427. Artificial flowers; hats. READ, A. R., The Studio, Winchelsea, Sussex. March 13, 1933, No. 7599. [Class 63.] A collapsable hollow article comprises two centre hubs revoluble relatively to each other, each hub having arms extending from it and each arm of one hub being connected to a circularly-displaced arm of the other hub, any point of connection being on a radius or in a radial plane intersecting the arc of displacement, whereby on revolving one hub relatively to the other a hollow article is formed. The stampedout blanks forming the hollow structure shown in Figs. 2 and 3 may be of card, paper, sheet metal, celluloid, &c. The coinciding tips of the arms b, bl are joined by a stitch, or adhesive, or a rivet giving a pivotal connection. The arms b, b<1> may have a pivotal connection with the disc a, a<1> so that they move in a more or less unbent condition to form a pyramidal structure. A sort of pivotal connection can be made by forming a crease across the root of each arm. The device may be used as a hat. The elements may be frame structures of wire, wood or thin sheet metal covered with paper, card, textiles, parchment or leather. The hubs may be thick enough for one to have circular and concentric guidance on the other, and may have finger-pieces for operating them and pin-and-slot connections for limiting turning movement. The arms may be of a wirelike character, or shaped like a screwpropeller blade, or petal-shaped, and the petals may overlap. The petals may be of different lengths, the tips of the shorter ones being connected to a point intermediate in the length of the longer. There may be four hubs, each pair having two sets of overlapping petals, making a cupped-flower shape. The hubs may be of conical or cylindrical form.
