Abstract

416,143. Steam turbines. WEIR, Ltd., G. & J., and HILLIER, H., Cathcart, Glasgow. May 29, 1933, No. 15425. [Class 110 (iii).] The supply of steam to a turbine driving a boiler-feed pump is controlled by the discharge pressure of the pump. A control valve 13 has three pistons 18, 19, 20, and upon upward movement due to the pressure of a spring 5, allows steam which enters a port 22, to flow in succession to nozzles 29, 32 and 31, and 30 through ports 201, 191, 181 and 19<2>. The pump discharge pressure acts upon the top of a plunger 2 to press the valve 13 downwards against the spring 5. Nozzles 27, 28 are open directly to the port 22. A hand-controlled valve 33 covers two further nozzles 34, 35. The pistons 18-20 may be loose discs on the valve spindle and move in cages provided with valve seats. The lower end of cylinder 2 is open to atmospheric or other datum pressure. Steam from the port 22 has access to each end of the valve 13. The laps of pistons 18-20 are so arranged that the greatest laps cover the greatest pressure differences, to reduce the steam leakage past the pistons.
