Abstract

415,530. Variable speed gearing; positive clutches. HUMBER, Ltd., WISHART, N. M., and HEYNES, W. M., Humber Works, Stoke, Coventry. April 25, 1933, No. 12049. [Class 80 (ii).] In a gear box embodying a dog clutch 13, 21 for bringing in one of the speeds, the slidable dog member 14 has splined thereon a friction synchronizing sleeve 17 which is urged towards its normal position, in which spring-loaded balls 18 carried by the member 14 engage an annular groove 19 in the sleeve, by springs 22. When the sleeve reaches its normal position, the springs 22, carried in the member 14, abut against shoulders 23 so as to be inoperative. As shown, the clutch is engaged to bring in second speed, the member 14 being integral with a gear 11 which is engageable with a gear 12 to bring in first speed.
