Abstract

In the process of roasting or roasting and sintering pulverulent sulphuriferous ores described in the parent Specification, when said ores contain volatilizable constituents such as zinc, the ore charge on to which the sulphuriferous ores are delivered by the ignition apparatus is replaced by a mass or layer consisting of roasted agglomerates or sinter returns or other finely granular oxidic material and reducing agent, the compounds of the volatilizable metals being reduced and the metals volatilized, such metals being then converted into oxides and removed with the roasting &c. gases from which they are then separated and collected. The process may be carried out in an apparatus similar to the one described in the parent Specification or the mass or layer of roasted agglomerates &c. may be in the form of a column moving downwards in a vertical container the latter being perforated to allow the ignited material to pass therethrough.ALSO:In the process of roasting or roasting and sintering pulverulent sulphuriferous ores described in the parent Specification, when said ores contain volatilizable constituents such as zinc, the ore charge on to which the sulphuriferous ores are delivered by the ignition apparatus is replaced by a mass or layer consisting of roasted agglomerates or sinter returns or other finely granular oxidic material and reducing agent, the compounds of the volatilizable metals being reduced and the metals volatilized, such metals being then converted into oxides and removed with the roasting &c. gases from which they are then separated and collected. The process may be carried out in an apparatus similar to the one described in the parent Specification or the mass or layer of roasted agglomerates &c. may be in the form of a column moving downwards in a vertical container, the latter being perforated to allow the ignited material to pass therethrough.
