Abstract

414,964. Winding - apparatus on motor vehicles. KENNEDY, D. S., Harewood Forest Works, Longparish, Hampshire. Jan. 10, 1934, No. 947. [Class 78 (v).] A winding drum e mounted concentrically with a driven road wheel c is always driven by the axle-shaft a and the road wheel is secured to a flange plate i mounted beside the drum so that it can rotate relatively thereto, the plate i being connectible to the drum by external means so that the drive can be conveyed to the plate and the road wheel for normal running. In the construction shown the plate i carries bolt l hinged at l<2> and adapted to engage between lugs el on the drum so that the drum and plate can be secured together. The drum e is secured by bolts f to a member b which is fixed to the shaft a and carries a brake drum d. The plate i, when it is free, can rotate on a bearing bush j<1> on the drum. In a modification the drum is connected to the driving member b by interengaging teeth, and the flange plate i has a boss which rotates on a bearing on the inner periphery of the drum. Two or more drums may be fixed to separate axle-shafts of a vehicle having two rear driving axles.
