Abstract
414,803. Road surface - grooving machine. HENDERSON, G., and HENDERSON, W. M., The Garage, Catrine, Ayrshire. March 8, 1933, Nos. 6967, 25701, and 29662. [Class 107.] A road-surface-grooving machine, adapted to prepare surfaces such as asphalt or concrete for the reception of a new surfacing material, comprises a carriage structure 1 connected to a road roller 4 or tractor and fitted with a pair of rotary cutting discs 5, 5<a>. In the form shown, the carriage is mounted on wheels 2, the axles 2<1> of which may be mounted in eccentric bushings to enable the height, of the carriage above the ground to be adjusted. The discs are arranged with their faces inclined to the line of travel of the machine, and are carried by brackets 6, 6a disposed one on either side of the central longitudinal and transverse axes of the carriage. The distance between the discs, measured normally to the line of travel, may be adjustable. A road-engaging cutter tool 7 is fitted to the carriage rearwardly of and in the longitudinal median plane between the discs. The carriage is secured to the roller by a pin 14 passing through vertical slots 17 in spaced side plates 11 of the carriage and through any pair of a series of pairs of holes 15, 151, 15<2>, in the flanges of a bracket 16 which is secured to a transverse bar 3 of the roller. This loose coupling enables the carriage to ride over any obstructions in its path. The pin 14 passes also through the bifurcated arms 13 of a lever 12 which is pivoted to the carriage by a pin passing through any of the pairs of holes 10, 10<1>, 102, in the side plates 11. Manually applied downward pressure exercised on the lever 12 is transmitted to the carriage by the pivot pin. The bar 3 may be extended to support a pair of carriages.
