Abstract
Raw silk is treated with a protease preparation, so that the gum is not removed, and is dried. It may then be stored or otherwise processed, followed by degumming by customary methods later, as with simultaneous dyeing. According to examples, raw silk is treated with: (1) a solution containing a bacterial enzyme preparation, sodium sulphite and a sulphonated oil, other similar ingredients being specified; (2) a solution of papain, sulphonated oil, potassium cyanide and monosodium phosphate; (3) a solution containing pancreatin sodium sulphite, and oils. In all cases, drying succeeds the treatment and in the last 2 examples, 13/15 Japan white silk is specified. Bacterial enzymes which may be used are obtained from aspergillus oryzea, mesentericus or subtilis, and proteolytic enzymes specified include trypsin and pepsin and mixtures. The pH of the solution may be regulated with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate or both. The extent of subsequent degumming may be regulated so as not to be complete and depends on the proteolytic treatment which may be brief or prolonged, and takes place at ordinary temperatures.
