Abstract

413,180. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc., 366, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Holt, L. B. ; Laconia, New Hampshire, U.S.A.) Nov. 16, 1933, No. 32001. Convention date, Jan. 18. [Class 74 (ii).] Relates to a plain knitted fabric in which different groups of stitch formations alternate in each wale, while like groups in adjacent wales are staggered longitudinally, in which the stitch formations comprising each course employ a plurality of yarns. According to the invention in each needle wale, tucked loops occur in certain stitch formations each repetition of one particular group. Thus m courses a, b, c and d, stitches in the left-hand wale include both the facing yarn x and the body yarn y in plating relation, while in the next wale, in corresponding courses, stitches comprise a single loop of the yarn y, with yarn x, floating at the rear of the fabric. In courses e, f, g and h, the reverse is the case. Short and long butted needles both having forwardly offset hooks, knit, wales L and H respectively. Fig. 1<x> shows the appearance of the fabric. Figs. 1 and 1<a> are developments of the cam system employed. Cam 18 has a needle depressing edge 20, which causes the long butt needles only, to move downwardly into groove 21, whilst the short butt needles are elevated by cam 18 to clearing level and delivered into groove 22. The guide M delivers facing yarn x at a point with just sufficient lead to wrap it round the short-butt needles so as to be taken by their hooks, whilst keeping it above the tops of the long-butt needles, behind which it drops. The yarn y is fed from the guide N at such a point that it wraps around both sets of needles, the float needles having been elevated by a clearing portion 23 of a cam 19. Cam sets A, B, C, and D are identical except that cam 17 of set D is cut away at 24 to deliver needle butts to cam 25 of the next set E. Here a cam slope 25<a> raises the long butt needles to be cleared in groove 26, and to take yarn x from guide M, whilst the short butt needles are not raised until they reach cam slope 27<a>. Thus the needles are now raised in reverse order and have exchanged their functions. Cam sets F, G, and H are identical with cam E, except that a riser 28 on cam 17 of set H delivers the needles at the proper elevation for cam set A. Any number of pairs of cams may be arranged around the cylinder. Certain cams may be arranged to raise the needles to tucking height only at certain of the cam sets, both yarns may be delivered at a single feed point, more than two yarns may be employed at a feed point and any number of stitches may constitute a wale group. By suitably combining all these characteristics, fabrics may be obtained in which, e.g. triple or quadruple tuck stitches occur. Various modified fabrics, and the cam sets producing them, are described.
