[Class 94 (ii).] A machine for closing the ends of paper &c. bag tubes S by folding over the straight-cut ends of the tubes and pasting around the same a U-section closing strip V is characterized by a pair of folding cylinders 5, 6 to which each straight-cut tube end is fed, the folding cylinder 5 having gripping means 21 adapted to feed the closing strip V, to which stripes of adhesive 31, 32 are applied, to the contact line of the two cylinders in such a manner that the said closing strip projects forward with the adhesive stripe 32, applied at its front edge, over the front edge K of the bag tube, and the folding cylinder 6 having a folding blade 36 which impinges upon the front end of the bag tube and upon the closing strip between the adhesive stripes 31, 32 and at this point drives the closing strip as well as the front end of the tube between controlled folding tongs 37 disposed on the folding cylinder 5, behind the gripping means 21, the tongs 37 being arranged to crease the engaged part and then release it whereupon the final folding over and pressing is effected in known manner. An endless bag tube, which may be of the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane " and formed with side gussets, is fed in at 1 to cut into blanks by the cutting device 2, 3. The closing strips V are severed from a web 7, fed by rolls 9 and tensioned by a cam and lever-operated guide roll 11, by a slide-supported spring-biassed knife 13 having a comb-like edge the slide being actuated by a cam-like roller 14. The forward edge of each strip V is gripped by the gripper 21 actuated by a cam 26 through a spring-biassed bell crank lever 23. The two adhesive stripes 31, 32 are applied by gumming blades 34, 35 fed from a tank 33. A narrow endless band 17, engaging a circumferential groove in the cylinder 5, presses the web 7 against the knifecarrying cylinder 12. The folding blade 36 presses the bag tube end and the applied closing strip, into the folding groove 37 of a cam actuated tong device, which creases the bag blank, Fig. 3, the bottom being completed, Fig. 5, by the passage of the blank between the cylinders 5, 19, a presser device 42 applying further pressure to the pasted portions, and the bags being delivered at 43 to a delivery conveyer.
