412,806. Metal wall-studs, girders, and like structural members. BUELOW, G., 15420, Archdale Avenue, Detroit, and BUELOW, H. W., 2013, Northwood Avenue, Royal Oak, both in Michigan, U.S.A. Sept. 16, 1933, No. 25707. Convention date, Aug. 12. [Class 20 (iv).] A metal wall-stud, joist, girder, or like structural element is formed in the body of the element with a pair of laterally-spaced slots 38 for receiving and bending nails driven thereinto for the purpose of securing material to the element. The element may consist of two channel members 20 with an intermediate hollow member 22 disposed between such members to provide the nail-receiving slots 38 as shown in Fig. 2. The members 20, 22 may be inwardly or outwardly curved, and in the former case the inwardly curved faces of the member 20 may be welded together. The channel members 20 are provided with bosses 40 adapted to be welded or otherwise secured to the intermediate member 22. Boards or sheets 44, 48 are secured to the metal unit by nails 46, 50 which are driven into the slots 38 and take up the curved form of such grooves. A half-unit may be formed as shown in Fig. 5 of two angle members 54 with an intermediate hollow member 52, and such a unit may be employed as the upper and lower members of a lattice girder as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the lattice members 76 then being of channel form and adapted to be fitted between, and welded to, the edges of the upper and lower hollow members 52<a>. Each of the upper and lower members of such a lattice girder may, alternatively, be formed from a single metal strip 82, the outer edges of which are bent as shown at 90 in Fig. 12, and the nail-receiving slots being formed between such portions 90 and portions 102 slit and bent from the central portion of the strip 82. In a modified form of this girder, shown in Fig. 13, the upper and lower members each comprises three portions, viz :-two angle members 88<a>, and a facing member 86<a> provided with bent portions 102<a> and having its edges 82<a> bent over the edges of the angle members 88<a>. In a further modification, a girder is built up of upper and lower members with a sheet metal connecting web, and the parts constituting the upper and lower members are connected by transverse ribs formed on such members instead of by bosses 40.
