Abstract
411,517. Knitting-machines. WILDMAN MFG. CO., Norristown, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Howie, K., and Krieble, C. C. ; Norristown, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Dec. 7, 1932, No. 34703. Convention date, Feb. 4. [Class 74 (ii).] The yarn guides of a straightbar machine are mounted upon endless flexible bands. The yarn guides t may be secured upon the bands by portions t<2> bent from the bands 26. The front portions of the bands 26 are arranged close together so that the guides t can feed their yarns correctly to the needles. A dog 34 is provided upon each of the bands 26 and is engaged by a pawl 31a, a number of pawls being mounted upon a block 31 which is reciprocated lengthways of the needle bed. The block 31 is secured to the upper stretch of a band 30 which carries the slur cock carrier 37 upon which is mounted a roll 37<c> engaging a spiral groove 38<a> on a rotary reciprocating draw-bar 38. Selvage stops Rs, La for determining the stroke of the yarn guides are pivotally mounted towards the two ends of the machine and are operated by levers 36<e> under pattern control. Each dog 34 has a stud 35, Fig. 9, for engagement with the stops Rs, Ls, and inclined lower surface 34<c>, 34d to engage the corresponding pawl 31<a>. Each pawl 31<d> is formed with inclined portions 31<b> for frictionally driving its dog 34, and is held in raised operative position by spring-pressed plungers 31<c> after selection. The pawls are selected and raised by members 31<j>, slidably mounted upon the block 31. Slides C1 .. C5 are brought by cams Ca1 upon a shaft b into the path of the sliding members 31j, and a member 31j stopped by a slide C1 .. C5 raises by a cam surface 31<h> thereon, the corresponding pawl. The shaft b is rotated once for each article, e.g. stocking, to be knitted. Means are provided for holding down the needle-bar during yarn change to prevent pressing-off of the fabric. When the threadguide is to be changed a hook 8d, Fig. 5, engages a pin 8<c> of an arm 8<b> and holds a roll 8<a> away from the needle-bar actuating cam. The roll 8<a> is carried by a rod 8 secured to the rock shaft 6 which controls the movement of the needlebar 1. Means are also provided for changing the stitch-length when reinforcing the heel or for making a loose course. The machine is stopped upon completion of the welt, and again upon completion of the leg by a lever operated by studs in a pattern drum. Pivotally mounted stops Ra which can be brought into operative position by pattern mechanism are provided for determining the stroke of the yarn-guide for the yarn used in the formation of the ravel courses. When the stops Ra are moved to inoperative position, a lever 36<w> is actuated to move to inoperative position the selvage stop Rs corresponding to the ravel yarn-guide, so that the yarn guide can be moved by its pawl 31<a> to " rest " position beyond the stop Rs. The dogs 34 are of different lengths, e.g. those for the splicing yarns are shorter than those for the body yarns so that the yarns are fed to the needles in correct plating arrangement. Means as described in Specification 400,142 may be provided for adjusting the narrowing points 44 lengthways of the needle bed. A stop motion is operated by a lever controlled by studs upon a pattern drum for stopping the machine at the completion of the welt and of the leg of a stocking. Specification 411,539 also is referred to.
