Abstract
411,441. Guards for machinery. HOBART MANUFACTURING CO., Troy, Ohio, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Meeker, D. A.; Troy, and Slager, J. C. ; 56, E. Norman Avenue, Dayton, both in Ohio, U.S.A.) Dec. 5, 1932, No. 34423. Convention date, Dec. 15, 1931. [Class 80 (iv).] In a food-chopping machine of the kind having a rotary bowl and high speed cutters rotating therein the knife cover is retained in the closed position by a latch which is interconnected with the control switch of the motor in such manner that the cover cannot be unlatched until the motor switch is " off " and the switch cannot be closed when the cover is unlatched. The latch comprises a bolt 81 having a flattened laterally extending end which, when the bolt is depressed against the action of the spring 89, is projected through a slot in the flange 92 of an upstanding member 90 secured to the machine frame, and when the bolt is turned, engages beneath the flange 92 and locks the cover in the closed position. Depressing the bolt engages the flattened end with a slot in the upper end of a shaft 117, which is therefore turned as the bolt 81 is turned. The shaft 117 is bored axially to permit the escape of meat juices &c., and carries an arm 120 connected by a ball joint 122 with a longitudinally slidable bar 124, which is aligned, when the switch-operating arm and shaft 104, 105, is in the " off " position, with a transverse hole 129 in the enlargement 128. The cover can be unlatched only when the switch is " off,' and the passage of the rod 124 through the hole 129 is permitted. The switch can only be closed when the cover is closed, and the rod 124 withdrawn from the hole 129 by the act of locking the cover. The switch comprises fixed contacts 101 and pivoted blades 102 joined as a unit and connected to arms 107 on the shaft 105 by links 112 having lost motion slots 113 and a tension spring 114 which latter ensures a snap action when breaking the circuit.
