Abstract

The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises a process of rendering an organic compound responsive to certain ranges of spectral emanations only, in order to stabilize it, by incorporating therein a minute quantity of a metal or metallic compound. It specifically includes the subject-matter of Specification 410,834. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. p ALSO:In the manufacture of synthetic resins formed by condensation or by condensation and polymerization, the formation of colour is avoided and the product is stabilized against the destructive effects of light by adding to the initial mixture a proportion not exceeding ,05 per cent and preferably not exceeding ,0005 per cent by weight of the material treated of one of the following metals or metallic compounds, viz. copper carbonate (Cu2(OH)2CO3), cobaltous carbonate, lithium carbonate, manganese carbonate, cadmium carbonate, barium carbonate, bismuth subcarbonate, calcium nitrate, beryllium nitrate, lithium nitrate, sodium acetate, cupric acetate, manganese acetate, cobaltic hydrate, beryllium hydrate, copper hydrate, thorium hydrate, a mixture of cobaltous carbonate and copper carbonate or of cobaltous carbonate, copper carbonate and bismuth subcarbonate, or colloidal or finely divided cobalt, cadmium or silver. Preferably copper carbonate or hydrate or cupric acetate is employed in a proportion not exceeding ,00035 per cent by weight of the total mass. The quantity of added substance required is predetermined by laboratory tests according to the nature of the condensation products and the added substance. The quantity required varies according to the vessel employed for the reaction, being, for example, smaller when working in a glass vessel than when an aluminium vessel is employed. The added substance is preferably intimately associated with the reagents under the influence of heat or agitation or both. In an example, equimolecular proportions of ethylene glycol and phthalic anhydride, with the addition of ,00025--,00035 per cent of copper carbonate, are heated to 110--150 DEG C., preferably to 130 DEG C., with agitation, the reaction preferably being continued until the acid member of the product is 0--13, 15--17, 19--25, 29--34 or 38--40. The ethylene glycol may be replaced by propylene glycol, glycerine, butylene glycol or other polyhydric alcohol and the phthalic anhydride by succinic acid, maleic acid or other polybasic acid. The process is also applicable to the manufacture of condensation products of urea and formaldehyde. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises in general a process of rendering a natural or synthetic organic compound responsive to certain ranges of spectral emanations only, in order to stabilize it, by incorporating therein a minute quantity of a metal or metallic compound. It specifically p includes the subject-matter of Specification 410,834, [Group III], whilst phenolic condensation products are mentioned as additional synthetic substances which may be treated. The specification also comprises the production of coloured products by the use of excess of metal, copper producing green, cobalt blue, cadmium red, silver yellow and blends of these metals other colours. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises a process of rendering an organic compound responsive to certain ranges of spectral emanations only, in order to stabilize it, by incorporating therein a minute quantity of a metal or metallic compound.
