410,574. Loading; shoots ; lifting &c. TOROK, J., 620, Pennsylvania Avenue, and BERGSTRESSER, E. L., 212, 6th Avenue, both in Renova, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Feb. 9, 1933, No. 4037. Convention date, Feb. 9, 1932. [Classes 78 (i), 78 (ii), and 78 (iv).] A coal discharge shoot in which the direction and rate of discharge of material is controlled from a remote station by suitable electrical controls is characterized by a pivoted gate 13, Fig. 1, at the discharge end regulating the size of the opening 11. A telescopic coal-shoot 1, is provided with an elbow extension 3 which is rotatable by ring gear 4 meshing with a motordriven pinion 5. Coal is delivered at the opening 11 in any direction being deflected on a plate 12. The gate member 13 is operated by a motor 15 and worm gear. Current for the motor 15 is preferably provided from collector rings 16 in association with the ring gear 4 and brushes 17 in fixed relation to the tube 1. The rings and brushes are provided with guards 22 and removable covers 21. Between the motor 15 and worm 36 is a magnetic brake 38 of known construction for withdrawing brake shoes 39, from the motor shaft against a spring 40. The ends of the gate 13 have lugs 41 to engage spring bumpers 42. When the gate is fully closed and a spring 45 is compressed to a predetermined point, the motor 15 becomes overloaded and stops automatically. In the ordinary way however, the motor 15 is controlled before this. The control circuit is shown at Fig. 5 with the motor represented as a threephase one at 15 with conductors 47<a>, 47b, 47<c> collectors rings 16, brushes 17 and a junction box 48. In circuit there is shown a line starter S and a thermal relay T. Push button controls are shown at P and the magnetic brake at 38. When forward push button 50 is pressed against a spring a circuit is closed through main L<2>, coil 54, conductors 55, 56 including contact 57 of thermal relay to L<3>, energizing coil 54 and causing contacts 52<a>, 52b, 52<c> of the line starter to close. Current passes from main L<1> through contact 52<a>, coil 58 of relay T to conductor 47a, collector ring 16 and conductor 72<a> to motor 15. Current also passes from main L2 through 52<b> 47b, and 72<b> to motor and from conductor L' through 52<c>, coil 59 of relay T, 47<c>, 72<c> to the motor. When reverse 51 is operated, the phases of the motor 15 are reversed and its rotation changed. The motor is stopped by pressing button 49 so as to open all contacts of the line starter. When the motor is going, and the gate 13 touches the bumpers, the motor 15 becomes overloaded and the thermal relay T is excessively heated whereupon elements 67 are flexed so as to move a cross arm 68 and contact 69. This opens a contact 57 and stops the motor. When the motor is stopped, current to the brake 38 is shut off and springs 40 on stop 39 retard movement of the gate. By revolving the bucket 3 with the gate 13 partially open, material is spread evenly in layers instead of pyramiding.
