Abstract
Cold process soaps containing solvents of grease are made by adding the solvent at or about the moment when the mixture of fat or fatty oil and alkali becomes thick enough for a mark made thereon to persist. Solvents specified are benzene, petroleum white spirit, carbon tetrachloride, dichlor-ethylenes, trichlorethylene, and tetrachlor-ethane. When a mixture of solvents is used the less volatile may be added to the oil before the alkali, especially when resin or oils of high titre are used; the resin- or oil-solvent mixture may then be poured into the lye. Liquid or semi-liquid soaps may be obtained by adding industrial alcohol or water to the solid soaps. In an example, a household or laundry soap is made by vigorously mixing at 37--40 DEG C. 18 lb. coco nut oil, 18 lb. cottonseed oil, 36 lb. tallow, and 24 lb. of soda lye 96 DEG Tw., immediately stirring in a mixture of 1 lb. sodium chloride, 4 lb. cane sugar, 1 lb. potassium carbonate, and 6 lb. water, and then at the critical moment specified above 3 lb. of carbon-tetrachloride and 9 lb. of white spirit; the mixture is left for about 24 hours. Specification 14902/91, [Class 91], is referred to.
