Abstract
410,251. Moulding plastic materials. BONNOT CO., 722, Mulberry Road, Canton, Ohio, U.S.A. Dec. 30, 1932, Nos. 36956 and 36957. Convention dates, Jan. 18 and Jan. 21. [Class 87 (ii).] Plastic materials, particularly ceramic materials, e.g. clays and shales are comminuted while in a zone of reduced pressure, in order to remove air &c. and are then consolidated and discharged from the zone of reduced pressure. The material may be fed to a hopper 41 wherein it is worked and fed forward by blades 58 on a shaft 53, the material being forced through a restricted orifice 48 into a chamber 49 which forms a seal for the vacuum maintained in a chamber 30. The material is forced from the sealing chamber through an aperture 46, the issuing stream being comminuted by a rotary cutter 37. The comminuted material is further worked by blades on a shaft 20 and is forced into a chamber 24 constituting a seal at the other end of the vacuum system, the material then being forced out of a die 26. The shafts 20, 53 may be driven at the same or at different speeds according to the relative feed capacity of the screws mounted thereon. A vacuum gauge 39 and sighting windows are fitted. Provision may be made for supplying water to the material in the hopper 41. In a modification the material may be supplied to a hopper 202, Fig. 11, from whence it is fed vertically downwards by mixing blades 204, and forced through a die 210, rotary blades 223 on an independently driven shaft 224 being employed to comminute the issuing-material which falls on to a conveyer 212. The material falls from the conveyer 212 on to a further intermittently moving conveyer 232 which delivers it to a cylinder 240 when a power actuated piston 242 is in raised position. On descent of the piston 242 communication between the cylinder 240 and the conveyer housing 230 is cut off and the entrapped material is forced down the cylinder 240 and ultimately through an extrusion die.
