Abstract
Rubber surfaces such as the outer surfaces of golf balls are subjected to the action of a rubber solvent in such manner that unevenness of the surfaces is removed, and then to a hardening treatment such as vulcanization or treatment with a halide of an amphoteric element. In an example, golf balls received from a mould are subjected to carbon tetrachloride vapour for a few seconds, or other solvents such as benzol, gasoline, butyl acetate, ethylene dichloride, and carbon disulphide may be used, or if desired the balls may be sprayed with or immersed in the liquid solvent. After the solvent treatment the balls are dried and then subjected to the action of anhydrous tin tetrachloride in vapour form or dissolved in ethyl acetate, ethylene dichloride or other solvent. The balls are then washed preferably in a liquid having a solvent action on the addition product of the rubber and the tin tetrachloride. The balls are subsequently polished to provide a hard, smooth surface with a low coefficient of friction. The process is applicable to natural or synthetic rubber, crude or deresinized balata, guttapercha and similar material. The rubber may be mixed with pigments, accelerators, colour stabilizers, and plasticizers. Specification 384,911 is referred to.
