Abstract

Refractory or abrasive material is made by fusing together alumina and added material consisting of substantial proportions of silica and an oxide or oxides of calcium, magnesium, barium, sodium or potassium. A fused magma is formed from which a crystalline structure of alumina or aluminous material develops within a matrix of more fusible material, which may be crystalline or not. The composite material may be crushed to form self-bonding grains from which articles are formed by moulding and firing, but additional binding material may be used. By regulating the proportions of silica and added oxide, a series of related abrasives may be made. In an example, a mixture of 70 parts of aluminous ore, 10 parts of lime of 20 parts of silica is fused in an electric furnace and cooled. Alumina crystallizes out and the remainder solidifies to a glassy matrix. Bauxite or clay may be used as the source of alumina, flint clay, or quartz sand for silica, unslaked lime or limestone for lime and magnesite for magnesia. Examples illustrating the manufacture of abrasive wheels, (self bonded or with added bond), floor tile aggregates, floor tiles and refractory articles are described. Specifications 324,312, [Class 22], and 343,896, [Group V], are referred to.ALSO:Refractory or abrasive material is made by fusing together alumina and added material consisting of substantial proportions of silica and an oxide or oxides of calcium, magnesium, barium, sodium or potassium.
