Abstract
408,758. Snap-action switches. ASH, F. S., 20, Malvern Avenue, Flixton, Lancashire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Jan. 5, 1933, No. 427. [Class 38 (v).] A switch adapted to be closed by hand and tripped to open by prepayment meter mechanism, timing mechanism or by an overload electromagnet, comprises a contact arm 11 pivoted at 28 and moved into engagement with a fixed contact 7 by the clockwise rotation of a cam 19 which is itself driven by the manual rotation of a wheel 13. The wheel 13 may be mounted on the coin shaft 12 of a prepayment meter so as to be operable when a coin has been inserted. The wheel carries two pins 23, 24 one of which engages a pin 21 fixed to the cam 19 so as to cause the cam to rotate clockwise when the wheel is rotated. Mutilated gearing on the wheel 13 then engages mutilated gearing 22 on the cam so that the cam continues to rotate until a spring 16 connected to the cam moves over dead centres. The teeth of the gearing are now disengaged so that the cam 19 rotates rapidly into the closed ' position in which the point 50 of the cam engages a roller 25 on the contact arm 11. Further rotation of the cam is prevented by the roller 34 on the cam engaging an arm of a lever 35 pivoted at 37 and having a pin 38 engaging a slot in a lever 40 pivoted at 41. The levers 35, 40 rotate slightly after the impact, the lever 40 coming to rest against a cam 15 which is slowly rotated by prepayment mechanism. Eventually the arm 40 slips along the straight face of the cam 15 allowing the lever 35 to rotate further and freeing the roller 34 so that the spring 16 which has been in a state of half-tension can rotate the cam back to its original position. The contact arm 11 simultaneously rotates into the open position under the action of a spring 29 which was strained during the closing movement. In modifications, the arm 40 is released by a time device or an overload device.
