Abstract

In a process for dephosphorizing steel in an induction furnace, the molten steel is treated therein with a molten and very fluid basic slag which covers and protects the surface of the metal against oxidation by the air substantially from the beginning of the operation, an intense agitation of the metal being produced by the electric field. Slags comprising silica, lime iron oxide and a flux such as fluorspar, sodium or potassium salts &c. are referred to and in an example a slag comprises 3 per cent of silica, 60 of lime, 35 of iron oxide and 2 of fluorspar.
