Abstract

Fatty oils are prepared by alcoholysis of a frosting or non-frosting oil with a polyhydric alcohol followed by esterification of the product with fatty acids derived from a non-frosting or frosting oil respectively. The oils produced may contain free alcoholic groups or may be treated with a further quantity of polyhydric alcohol. China wood oil, Japanese wood oil and citicica oil are frosting oils (i.e. possessing the property of drying to a flat opaque film) and any other fatty oil including drying, semi-drying or non-drying oils such as linseed oil, sofflower oil, sunflower seed oil, perilla oil, soya bean oil, rubber seed oil, cotton seed oil or sardine oil may be used as the non-frosting oil. Suitable polyhydric alcohols include glycerol, sorbitol or pentaerythritol. The oils may be used in the manufacture of coating composition and especially those containing free hydroxyl groups for the manufacture of alkyd resins. In examples: (1) china wood oil or linseed oil, glycerol and litharge are heated together and the product is heated with linseed oil or china wood oil fatty acids respectively to yield a neutral oil; (2) a varnish is prepared comprising the oil of example 1 or other of the new oils, ester gum, mineral spirits and a cobalt drier; (3) an alkyd resin is prepared by heating a synthetic china woodlinseed oil, glycerol and linseed oil together and treating the product with phthalic anhydride. The product dissolved in a thinner with a drier yields a varnish.ALSO:Fatty oils are prepared by alcoholysis of a frosting or non-frosting oil with a polyhydric alcohol followed by esterification of the product with fatty acids derived from a non-frosting or frosting oil respectively. Esterification catalysts such as lead, sodium, calcium, barium, zinc or magnesium oxides may be used. China wood oil, Japanese wood oil, and citicia oil are frosting oils (i.e. possessing the property of drying to a flat opaque film) and any other fatty oil including drying, semi-drying or non-drying oils such as linseed oil, safflower oil, sunflower seed oil, perilla oil, soya bean oil, rubber seed oil, cotton seed oil or sardine oil may be used as the non-frosting oil. Suitable polyhydric alcohols include glycerol, sorbitol or pentaerythritol. The oils may be used in the manufacture of coating composition and especially those containing free hydroxyl groups for the manufacture of alkyd resins.
