Abstract

Films, foils, or sheets are obtained by extruding a solution of a cellulose ester or ether in a neutral solvent, solvent mixture, or mixture of solvents, into a coagulating medium containing the same solvent, solvent mixture, or mixture of solvents, and subjecting the coagulated materials to a drying operation, the solvent, or in the case of a mixture of solvents at least one constituent thereof, being less volatile than the non-solvent so that during drying the materials retain some solvent after all the non-solvent has been removed. Alternatively, the concentration of the cellulose derivative does not exceed 15 per cent, and the solvent, or in the case of a mixture at least one constituent thereof, has a boiling point not less than that of the non-solvent of the coagulating medium or is not more volatile than the non-solvent, and removal of the coagulating medium is effected by washing or drying. The cellulose derivative may be cellulose acetate or other organic ester or ether of cellulose. The solvent may be dioxane methylene ethylene dioxide, an ester or ether of dioxane dicarbinol, diacetone alcohol, ethyl lactate, diethyl tartrate, or an ester of glycol or methyl glycol. The non-solvent may be water, alcohol, or a hydrocarbon. Salts or sugars may be added to the coagulating bath. The films may be stretched continuously with production. In an example, cellulose acetate dissolved in diacetone alcohol is extruded on to a drum immersed in ethyl alcohol containing 10 per cent of diacetone alcohol. The film obtained is dried on a steam heated cylinder and yields a transparent product. In another example, a 15 per cent solution of cellulose acetate in dioxane is extruded on to a drum immersed in an aqueous solution of dioxane. The film is dried on a heated roller and yields an opaque product.
