Abstract

405,369. Automatic guns. FARQUHAR, M. G., 29, King Street, St. James's Square, London. Sept. 3, 1932, No. 24591. [Classes 92 (ii) and 119.] Relates to automatic guns having the breech mechanism described in Specifications 28587/07, 17211/09, 9118/10, 27972/11, 28792/12, 15028/15, [all in Class 119, Smallarms], 124,792, [Class 92 (ii), Ordnance &c.,], 126,055 and 127,967, [both in Class 119, Smallarms], which comprises an arrangement of springs and catches whereby the barrel and breech-block recoil together and return still locked, the breechblock being then unlocked and reciprocated by springs compressed on recoil. According to the present invention, the barrel 7, body 6, and spring system 8 are mounted as a self-contained recoiling unit on a fixed frame-bar 5 which is provided with a stand or shoulder support, the recoiling parts co-operating with the fixed frame, as by a rack-and-pinion device 11, 5b, to effect compression of the springs. In the application to a machine gun as shown, the recoiling unit is guided on an inverted U -shaped frame 5 by front and rear spring-controlled slides 17, 22 and the breech-operating springs within the casing 8 are compressed during recoil by a chain and sprocket gear 13, 12 the sprocket 12 of which is rotated on the casing 8 by pinions 11 co-axial with the sprocket which engage fixed racks 5b on the frame 5.
