Abstract

<PICT:0405276/III/1> In film evaporators of the type in which the liquid flows down the inside of a vertical jacketed cylinder 1 against which it is pressed by a plurality of rearwardly inclined notched blades 11 rotating about a vertical axis 10, the surface of the liquid is constantly disturbed by using a substantial number of blades, e.g. sixteen, rotating at about 25 feet per second and free escape is provided for the liquid at the bottom of the cylinder without permitting access of air. Liquid, e.g. sugar syrup is delivered from a bent pipe 14 through a lateral slot 14a on to the inside of the cylinder 1. The blades 11 are hinged on spindles 16 carried by members 15 fixed to the axis 10 which is driven from a pulley 12. The lowest member 15 supports a lipped tray 17 from which the boiled sugar is transferred by centrifugal force into a jacketed hopper H having a self-sealing pivoted cap valve 28. The vapours involved are removed by a fan 13. The evaporator is incorporated in a plant for boiling sugar for confectionery comprising also a cooling table and collecting bowl and a driving motor.
