Abstract

The fusible condensation product obtained from a primary aromatic amine and formaldehyde in the absence of acid or in the presence of not more than one-fifth mol. of acid per mol. of amine is subjected to the action of a further quantity of an aldehyde or a substance which yields aldehyde with or without an acid condensing agent and the product is hardened at a raised temperature with or without the addition of pressure. The initial condensation product may be used with a filler or made in the presence of a filler and the aldehyde subsequently added. As aldehydes may be used formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, furfural, crotonic aldehyde, paraldehyde or acrolein and as substances yielding aldehydes hexamethylenetetramine or polyphenol-alcohols may be used. Suitable amines are aniline, m-toluidine, a -naphthylamine. Suitable acids are inorganic acids such as hydrochloric or nitric acids or organic acids such as acetic or salicylic acid. In examples (1) aniline and formaldehyde are heated with nitric acid and the ground product is heated with furfural. (2) Formaldehyde is added to a mixture of aniline and salicylic acid and the product is ground with wood meal saturated with furfural with or without salicylic acid. (4) Aniline dissolved in alcohol is treated with formaldehyde and a solution of the product in benzene is mixed with wood meal and the solvent removed, the residue being heated with paraformaldehyde. (5) A solution of aniline in alcoholic formic acid is treated with formaldehyde and the product heated with paraformaldehyde. (6) Aniline is treated with formaldehyde in the presence of glacial acetic acid and the product is heated with paraformaldehyde. (7) Dry wood-meal saturated with aniline is treated with formaldehyde containing glacial acetic acid and the dried product treated with furfural. The product is mixed with stearic acid and zinc stearate for moulding.
