[Class 28 (ii).] In a machine for filleting or boning fish ; the fish are conveyed, e.g., by the conveyer described in Specification 372,455, tails foremost, under a pair of spaced disc knives 12, mounted on a swinging arm 14 which is so cam-controlled that the disc knives slit the fish on both sides of the smaller part or flat section only of the backbone, and are then raised to an inoperative position. The swinging of the arm 14 is effected by a roller-ended lever 21 secured to the shaft 16 and co-operating with a rotary cam 23. The knives 12 are flanked by a diverging spreader 26 which is pivoted at 27 to a counterweighted swinging arm 28 pivoted to a frame 30 at 29. The pivoting of the spreader 26 on its pivot 27 is controlled by a spring 34 and the swinging of the arm 28 is limited by an adjustable stop 35. The spreader 26 and a succeeding spreader 36, pivoted to the arm and limited in its swinging by an adjustable stop 37, are grooved on their undersides to accommodate the vertically disposed flat part of the backbone. The boning is completed by two plain or serrated disc knives 38 disposed at an angle to one another. In operation, the forward part of the spreader 26 enters the cut portion of the fish and spreads it. When the uncut thicker part of the fish meets the spreader, the fore end tips up, and is then brought level again by the bodily rising of the spreader with the arm 28 as the fish advances. As the fish leaves the spreader 26, the rear end is retained elevated as the fore end drops, and finally the arm 28 and the spreader fall bodily. The spreader 36 also rises and falls according to the position of the fish.
