[Class 70.] Rubber thread is made by depositing rubber from a rubber containing fluid preferably latex on to a continuously progressing surface having a series of grooves therein in the direction of travel of the surface and wherein the grooves are separated by comparatively sharp edges so as initially to produce in the grooves a series of continuous rubber threads connected by relatively thin films of rubber over the sharp edges between the grooves. These thin films are subsequently cut by pressure against the sharp edges. In operation rubber latex from the container 10 is spread on the travelling band 13 by the spreader 14, passed through the oven 17 and then between the rollers 20 and 21. If compounding ingredients were included in the original latex vulcanization takes place in the oven 17, and the material emerges as a series of rubber threads joined together by a thin skin of rubber which is cut by the sharp edges of the grooves during the passage between rollers 20 and 21. If desired a separate vulcanizing chamber may follow the drying chamber 17. The threads now pass between the take off rolls 22 and 23 and on to the winding up spools 24. The air in 17 is heated by passage through the blower 18 and heater 19. The roller 21 may be heated if desired. The band 13 which is preferably made of stainless steel is cleaned on each circuit by the buffer 16.
