Abstract

404,150. Paper and like tubes. WARBURTON, R. E. L., 42, Rutland Gate, London. Feb. 4, 1933, No. 3467. [Class 99 (ii).] A tubular abrasive element or sleeve for use on the hub or other rotary part of an abrading- machine is formed by winding spirally a strip 1 of abrasive-coated material on a former or mandrel, the strip consisting of a backing sheet 2 having abrasive 3 secured by adhesive 4 over a portion of the width of the strip, and leaving an uncoated portion 8. When the strip is wound, the coated portion engages only over the uncoated portion of the next convolution, being secured by adhesive ; the strip may be wound to form a long sleeve, from which portions of the desired length may be cut, and the sheet 2 may be coated on a portion of both sides so that short lengths may be turned inside out for utilizing the original inner coating. In a modification, the strip is wound on a permanent mandrel in the form of a paper &c. tube, the uncoated edge of the strip being omitted and the edges of the convolutions abutting. In a further modification, Fig. 6, for use with fine abrasive, the strip has an abrasive coated portion 3a secured to a backing sheet 2, so that the coated portion overhangs the sheet 2 by a margin 8a of width equal to that of the uncoated portion 8. The element may be given a contoured surface by moulding, or the ends of a cylindrical length may be turned inwardly as described in Specification 404,151.
