Abstract

Water-impermeable and waterproof papers and pasteboards containing 50-60 per cent of asphalt distributed in finely divided form are prepared by pretreating the fibrous pulp in the hollander or beating vat with solutions of resin soaps, oleates of alkali metals, alkaline gels or alkali salts of turkey red oils, thereupon adding the requisite quantity of asphalt in the form of an aqueous emulsion, and working up the material on the paper-machine. If desired, prior to working up the pulp on a paper-machine, a precipitant may be added to cause the asphalt to be precipitated in finely divided form throughout the mass; the use of sodium chloride, sulphate or bisulphate, aluminium sulphate or alum is specified. In an example wood-cellulose is treated with water-glass until slightly alkaline, a 50 per cent aqueous asphalt emulsion added, and after mixing alum is incorporated to precipitate the emulsion throughout the mass to which fillers &c., may also be added and which is then worked up on the paper-machine; it contains about 60 per cent of asphalt. The products may contain fillers such as glass, mica or starch gel, may be coloured, and may also before reaching the paper machine be suitably coated, for instance with oil or lacquer paints.
