[Class 87 (ii).] In the transverse cutting of an extruded stream of clay into separate wire-cut bricks, the stationary stream is held rigidly during the cutting- operation and the wires are moved bodily downwards through the clay in addition to moving to-and-fro longitudinally to give a sawing cut. The clay stream is delivered to a table 2 and is pressed against the rigid back plate 4 by the raising and inward movement of a front plate 8 actuated from the rocking shaft 20 by means of the treadle 19. This plate is partly counterweighted at 25 so that it will drop slowly by gravity when the treadle is released. A frame 37, furnished with tensioned cutting-wires spaced by a slotted gauge 50, is pulled down by the handle 52 about its pivot 33 so that the wires pass through slots in the members 4, 2 and 8 and completely sever the bar. The shaft 33, on which the frame is mounted loosely is driven continuously so that eccentric pins 35 on its ends engage members 39 on the cutting-frame and reciprocate it continually in a longitudinal direction. The frame is partly balanced by a slidable counterweight 59 which changes its radius of action so that the frame will either remain permanently raised or lowered. The cut bricks are pushed on to a table supported on the ends of the arms 61 and are removed with the table.
