Abstract
402,113. Colour kinematography. KELLEY, W. VAN D., 6723, Santa Monica Boulevard, Hollywood, California, U.S.A. May 23, 1932, No. 14601. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 97 (i) and 98 (ii).] A positive film is made from a pair of colourcomponent negatives, alternate frames of the positive being made from the respective negatives, and one series of frames only being tinted corresponding to one colour-component, the positive being projected at twice the normal speed. The frames of the positive may have half the standard height, and the uncoloured series of frames may be slightly fogged, or have lines printed thereon, or have a partially opaquing tint applied. The negatives may be made by exposing alternate frames through complemental colour filters, from superposed sensitive emulsions, one sensitive, the other insensitive, to red, or by using a double or triple film for simultaneous presentation to the lens. The positive may be made by using stock coated with a dye insoluble in the developing baths. When developed and fixed, the colour-component frames corresponding to the dye colour are coated with a colourless transparent waterproofing material, and the dye is bleached out of the other series of frames. The positives may also be made by coating alternate frames with a coloured transparent waterproof coating material. The films may carry a sound record, from which the colour is bleached out. Among the dyes that may be used are benzopurpurine, congo-red, erioglaucine and neptune green SGX. Suitable bleaching solutions include sodium peroxide or sodium hydrosulphite. The solution for waterproofing the coloured portions may comprise celluloid dissolved in amyl or ethyl acetates.
