Abstract

401,889. Friction gearing. NEWTON, N. B., Newton & Bennett Works, Valetta Road, Acton, London. Nov. 16, 1932, No. 32452. [Class 80 (ii).] A centrifugal friction clutch has casing parts 4, 5, connected round their periphery by links 30 and flyweights 31, the friction plates 6 being pressed together when the parts 4, 5, move towards one another under centrifugal force. A pressure plate 9 and springs 10 are inserted between the plate 9 and the part 4. An annular flange on the part 4 abuts a flange 28 on the part 5 in the engaged position, and forms with a flange 32 on the part 5 a dash-pot to which oil is admitted through holes 33, 34. The springs 10 are held under compression by studs 15 connecting the part 4 and the pressure plate 9, and separate adjusting means may be provided for the springs 10 or flange 28. Springs 11 separate the parts 4, 5, in the unclutched position. Manual declutching is obtained by a fork 25 acting on the pressure plate 9 through a lever 24 and thrust bearing 23. Outward movement of the flyweights 31 may be limited by a ring. Instead of the parts 4, 5 forming a dash-pot, a separate dash-pot may be fitted. In a modification, the pivot block 31a on the part 5 is bolted directly to the flywheel 8, and the studs 15 are replaced by a ring secured to the pressure plate 9 and engaging the part 4.
