Abstract
401,428. Extruding plastic substances. ROCKHARD RESINS, Ltd., Abbey House, Baker Street, London, and JONES, F. W., 19, Park Hill Road, Croydon. July 11, 1932, No. 19588. [Class 87 (ii).] Rods, tubes, beading &c. of thermo-setting plastic materials are made by extruding the material against a definite and predetermined pressure. The material is fed into a hopper C communicating with a mould A<1> in which reciprocates an hydraulically actuated ram D, forward movement of which is effected by a plunger D<1> while the return stroke is effected by the plunger rod D<4>. The material is extruded through a die A<2> of the required cross section and the extruded column may, during its movement, be gripped by magnetically actuated pivoted clamps E, carried by a ram F<4> which slides on guides F<2> against predetermined hydraulic pressure. In a modification, clamps E Fig. 3 are mechanically engaged with the extruded bar by cam actuated linkage N<2>, N<3>, the ram D also being crank driven in this case. In a further modification, the extruded bar is passed into a guide tube in which it abuts against a co-axial plunger which moves rearwardly with the bar against hydraulic pressure. The counter-pressure may also be applied by a weight, spring or electro-magnetic means. The mould and die may be cooled at J<1> and J, and electrical heating may be applied at K.
