Abstract
Textile fabrics, for example artificial silk, are sized with a mixture of polyvinyl alcohols or their water-soluble derivatives, in which the viscosity in aqueous solution of one component differs from that of another. The polyvinyl alcohols may be made by saponifying polyvinyl acetates, prepared for example by heating vinyl acetate with sodium perborate and acetic anhydride in the absence of a solvent or diluent, polyvinyl chloracetate and interpolymers made from equimolecular quantities of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloracetate. The water-soluble derivatives of polyvinyl alcohol include the product of reaction of an alkylene oxide with polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl alcohol partially esterified with lauric acid, polymerized methyl vinyl ether, partially saponified polyvinyl acetate still containing one-third of the acetyl groups and soluble in both water and ethanol, and polyvinyl alcohol partially condensed with maleic anhydride made by interpolymerizing equimolecular quantities of vinyl chloride and maleic anhydride and saponifying with sodium hydroxide. Substances such as borax, sodium carbonate, glucose, cane sugar, polyglycerine, urea-glycerine condensation products, triethanolamine, and water-soluble carbohydrate derivatives such as dextrin, methyl cellulose or dimethoxytrioxyhexane made by catalytic reduction of methyl cellulose, may be added to the size. Specification 382,785 is referred to.ALSO:Textile fabrics, for example artificial silk, are sized with a mixture of polyvinyl alcohols or their water-soluble derivatives, in which the viscosity in aqueous solution of one component differs from that of another.
