Abstract
Protein decomposition products, such as the moderately highly decomposed products which give the Breiret reaction obtained by heating a protein in a caustic alkali solution, are added to intensive alkaline treatment baths for the bucking and mercerization of vegetable fibres and fibre structures and for the bucking of fibres or fibre structures of regenerated cellulose. Suitable proteins are albumen, casein, glue, skin, flesh parts, hair, fruits, seeds and gluten and they may be decomposed by means of alkalies, acids, oxidizing agents, pectases and steam. In examples, (1) a solution of caustic soda and soda in water together with casein decomposed by heating with caustic soda is used for bucking de-sized cotton fabric; (3) a cold caustic soda solution containing the decomposed protein of example (1) is used for mercerizing raw cotton yarn.ALSO:Decomposition products of protein or albuminous substances are added to intensive alkaline treatment baths for the bucking or scouring of vegetable or regenerated fibres or fibre structures. Suitable proteins are albumen, casein, glue, skin, flesh, hair, fruits, seeds, and gluten; they may be decomposed by alkalies, acids, oxidizing agents, pectases, steam, or other known means. Up to 20 gm. of protein per litre of bath is used. For example, 1000 kg. of desized cotton fabric is bucked by the solution in 2200 litres of water of 18 kg. of caustic soda, 900 gm. of soda powder, and 2 gm. of casein decomposed by heating with 8 kg. of 15 per cent. caustic soda solution.
