[Class 112.] A detachable thread winder, Fig. 17, is provided with a tapered end 41 to the winder spindle which can be pressed into a corresponding socket in a short spindle 34, Fig. 2, permanently mounted in the machine head. The short spindle has a rubber friction bush 35 and is carried eccentrically in a plate 31 mounted in the machine head so that when the latter is given a half turn the bush 35 is pressed into driving contact with the machine pulley 18 and at the same time moves the pulley 18 out of engagement with a driving disc 20 on the upper sewing shaft 15. The winder comprises a plate 39 in which is journalled a pin 40. Screwed to the pin 40 is a slotted pin 42 which engages with the bobbin. A spring 47 forces a thread guide 45 away from the plate 39 and a spring 48 presses it towards the pin 42. Before winding the guide 45 is pressed under a catch 49b and is held there until sufficient yarn is wound on the bobbin. It is then forced by the yarn out of the catch 49b and enables the spring 47 to move it away from the plate 39 and stop the winding.
