Abstract

397,239. Thermally-actuated valves, dampers, &c. WINGFIELD, B. T., Brooklyn, The Green, West Drayton, Middlesex. April 7, 1932, No. 9964. [Class 135.] A thermal-actuating device for valves, dampers, &c. comprising a capsule or closed bellows chamber A containing volatile fluid and provided with an electric heater C controlled by a hand, pressure or thermal switch is fitted with a switch P adapted to interrupt the heater circuit when the pressure generated in the thermal chamber exceeds that necessary to produce the desired operating movement. The valve spindle is held by a spring R against a heat-insulating block Q carried by the lower end of the bellows A while the upper plate is recessed to provide a housing for a block of vitreous enamel in which the heater resistance is embedded. The upper plate is secured to a spindle D provided with a collar E normally held by a spring G against a support F. After the valve has seated further expansion of the bellows compresses the spring G and in so doing the end of the spindle D tilts a mercury switch P to break the heater circuit. According to the Provisional Specification the switch may be operated by an independent diaphragm chamber connected to the bellows or a spring may be interposed between the valve and thermal chamber and the compression of this spring used to actuate the switch.
