Abstract

396,820. Electrolytic production of magnesium. JOHNSON, MATTHEY, & CO., Ltd., 78, Hatton Garden, London.- (Assignees of Soc. de Produits Chimiques des Terres Rares ; 67, Rue de' Prony, Paris.) Feb. 17, 1932, No. 4762. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1931. [Class 41.] In obtaining magnesium by electrolysis of fused magnesium chloride, a submerged iron cathode 3 is employed and is cooled, for example by an external projection 2, to such a degree that the temperature of the molten metal rising from it is only slightly above its melting point. The projection 2 may be enclosed within a flue through which a current of air is passed. The cathode may be introduced through the side of the cell instead of the base. Cooling may be regulated by a thermo-couple, preferably attached by its sheath to the cathode. The metal collects between partitions 4 and is withdrawn by an iron pipe which, with any other metal accessories, is thermally connected to the cathode.
