Abstract
Cellulose is esterified in the presence of a catalyst comprising an aliphatic sulphonic acid which contains at least one further acidic group or atom derived from a inorganic acid, e.g. a nitro group, halogen atom, or another sulphonic acid group. These catalysts do not enter into union with the cellulose and are completely removed by washing, giving stable primary or secondary esters. The following examples are given:--(1) Cotton linters are pretreated in acetic acid and acetylated in a mixture of acetic anhydride, methylene chloride, and methane disulphonic acid. (2) Cotton is pretreated as in (1) and esterified with acetic anhydride in the presence of benzene and methane disulphonic acid. (3) Cotton linters are pretreated and reacted with a mixture comprising acetic anhydride, isovalerianic anhydride, benzene, ligroin, and methane disulphonic acid, the mixture having been saturated with sulphur dioxide. (4) Pretreated cotton linters are acetylated with a mixture consisting of acetic anhydride, benzene, methane disulphonic acid, and sodium perchlorate. (5) Wood pulp pretreated in acetic acid is caused to react with a mixture consisting of acetic anhydride, sulphur dioxide, benzene, and trichlormethane sulphonic acid. (6) Pretreated cotton is acetylated with a mixture of acetic anhydride, benzene, sulphur dioxide, and chlormethane disulphonic acid. (7) Cotton is pretreated and acetylated in a mixture containing acetic anhydride, benzene, sulphur dioxide, and nitromethane disulphonic acid. (8) Bleached cotton linters are pretreated and acetylated with acetic anhydride in the presence of glacial acetic acid, monochloracetic acid, and nitromethane disulphonic acid. (9) Pretreated cotton is esterified in a mixture comprising acetic anhydride, benzene, sulphur dioxide, and propane trisulphonic acid. (10) Cotton is pretreated and added to a mixture of acetic anhydride, sulphur dioxide, benzene, and bromomethane disulphonic acid. Methane trisulphonic acid is also specified as a suitable catalyst.
