Abstract

396,057. Testing physical qualities of materials. SOUTHWELL, R. V., Engineering Laboratory, Parks Road, Oxford. Jan. 26, 1932, No. 2394. [Class 106 (ii).] Comprises a pendulum impact testing machine having in combination a swinging anvil provided with means for supporting specimens to be tested, a swinging hammer, and means for transmitting the blow from the hammer to the specimen on each side of the centre thereof. The anvil A and hammer B are each suspended by eight wires a from two parallel beams and when raised the hammer is held in its suspended position by an electromagnet. Turnbuckles provide adjusting means for the wires. The hammer B is of elongated form and the wires b are secured to pins d passing across the slotted ends of spindles e mounted on ball bearings f. The striking face g is of hardened tool steel. The anvil A is of channel form with outstanding legs k to which the wires a are secured. The specimen E is round in cross section and provided with a central reduced section F having a V-groove G in the middle. It rests against hardened steel seatings H provided upon portions J of the anvil against which it is held by rubber bands. A yoke K is interposed between the hammer and specimen straddling the latter and provided with load points L symmetrically arranged on opposite sides of the centre. To measure the swing of anvil and hammer after impact threads l, m attached to the hammer and anvil are passed through felt pads P to afford slight friction. After the test, a plumb bob r and a cable t are attached in turn to the anvil and hammer, and the cable t is wound on a winch V until the thread l or m is taut, the position of a plumb bob r on the anvil is then read against a scale q.
