Abstract
394,669. Moulding abrasive and refractory articles. CARBORUNDUM CO., Ltd., Trafford Park Road, Manchester. -(Carborundum Co. ; Niagara Falls, New York, U.S.A.) Dec. 28, 1931, No. 31691/32. Divided on 394,667. [Class 87 (ii).] Moulded bonded articles, such as abrasive wheels and refractory articles, are made by placing in a mould an oversupply of a mix containing granular material and bond, applying to the mix in the mould a preliminary consolidating pressure which is substantially uniform over different small parts of the area of the surface of the mix by means of a deformable pressing member capable of conforming to the irregularities of the surface of the mix, removing excess mix and further consolidating the article under comparatively heavy pressure. The preliminary consolidating pressure may be employed in conjunction with a jolting of the mix as described in Specification 394,668. The final consolidation may be carried out so that a predetermined volume of the mix in the mould is consolidated to a predetermined volume, e.g. by means of a stop mould. Abrasive wheels may be made in the apparatus shown which includes a mould comprising a body ring 3, a strike-off ring 4, a base plate 5 and a central post 6 for forming the arbor hole in the abrasive wheel. The deformable pressing member may comprise a rubber bag 25, Fig. 1, held in place by a metal cap 24 secured to the top of the mould, the bag 25 having a supply tube 26 connected to a suitable source of fluid, e.g. air under pressure. Instead of applying a fluid pressure to the bag a closed fluid pressure cushion 41, Fig. 2, may be used, weights 42 imparting the desired pressures. After the material in the mould has been subjected to the preliminary consolidating pressure the strike-off ring 4 is removed, the top surface of the mix levelled off with a straight edge to remove the excess mix and the remaining mix subjected to the final consolidating pressure by means of a plunger.
