Abstract

[Class 103 (i).] In friction clutches or brakes of the kind in which centrifugal balls, rollers, or wedges 2 exert a wedging action on friction members 3 disposed on each side thereof and bring them into frictional engagement with the driven part of the coupling, the driving hub 1 carries axial guides for the friction members and projections 11 which form radial guides for the centrifugal members. As shown, the projections 11 are carried by a flange 10 on a disc 9 integral with the hub 1, this flange also being formed with slots 13 constituting guides for projections 12 on the friction members. The driven member of the coupling comprises a pair of discs 4 journalled on the hub 1 and formed with flanges 14 by which they are secured together. The surfaces at which friction occurs may be normal to the axis, as shown, conical, or formed with ribs and grooves. Ventilation is effected by apertures 6, 7 in the driven member, radial flanges 5 on the hub, and grooves 8 in the friction members. An elastic band 16 preferably surrounds the centrifugal members to counteract the effect of gravity thereon. The power transmitted may be controlled by varying the distance between the members 4, and if desired a coupling may comprise a plurality of the units described.
