Abstract
Ferro-boron is made by the thermo-aluminic reaction of a mixture of boracite, iron oxide (preferably magnetite), an aluminium-magnesium alloy, and potassium chlorate, the boracite being preferably present in excess. Boracite may be replaced by a mixture of its components boron trioxide, magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride, or by mixtures of boric acid with other alkaline earth oxides or chlorides.
